Wonder Woman - MOVIE REVIEW

Now to talk about Wonder Woman. I’m just going to say it directly… it was a fun super hero action movie with a lot of heart and charm. The first and second acts of the movie were the best parts of the movie which focuses on Wonder Woman, Diana as she grows up to be this strong and skilled Amazon set upon the task to rid world of the God of War, Aries; And her relationship with Steve Trevor and his gang of misfits as they go on a mission to stop a plot to prolong WW1 further before the armistice is signed. Wonder Woman in this movie is so lovable (if Gal Gadot’s face is not enough) and has a lot of charm with her naiveté with the modern world as compared to her life in Themascyra and of course a lot of the humor and charm of the movie stems from that but it doesn’t bog down from it of using the same tropes. But apart from her charm and caring nature, Wonder Woman is still a warrior and the movie delivers on showing us why that is (later on that). I mean… the true strength of the Wonder Woman character is that she is a very caring, lovable, and charming woman who is also a strong warrior who will do the right thing as she sees it. Did I say she is such a loving and caring character that speaks her mind in very just way? That ice cream scene would melt me if I was the vendor. Such a small scene yet, I loved it.

Even though I loved Gal Gadot physicality and aspects of Wonder Woman in the movie, I’m still not sold on her acting chops. Cause come the 3rd act of the movie where most of the dramatic scenes are played, I wasn’t that convinced on her. Yes, she did an amazing job as Wonder Woman but it is still lacking. Hopefully she will learn from this in the upcoming Justice League movie. But what really held this movie and honed in for Wonder Woman is Steve Trevor played by Chris Pine who gave a solid performance overall and gave focus to Wonder Woman as a character. The best thing about Pine is not only his acting but his comedic timing. Diana and Trevor scene in the boat as they were about to sleep, the comedic dialogue there was really good but it was Pine’s comedic timing that really made it interesting. Even if the line about Diana’s father is Zeus was already in the trailers, it was still funny when it happened in the movie. So props to Chris Pine for his work in this movie. Though a letdown of this movie is its villains, they are mostly one-sided except maybe for Dr. Poison but still not saying much. I mean… the most prominent villain is a mustache twirling and incompetent henchmen shooting villain trope. Of course you wouldn’t root for this guy. The 3rd act also is bog down by it’s confusing editing on a frantic focus to either go with Wonder Woman or Trevor. Not to mention it was CGI heavy come the end with some scenes really poorly done.

Overall, this movie is a lot of fun to watch. Not only for the action but also for its charm and laughs. Though do I think this was a masterpiece of a movie? No. I would say it was on par with the 1st Captain America movie even though to its plot structure with a few tweaks. Logan is still the movie to beat in year of for Comicbook Superhero movies. But on its own, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie and you will love LOVE Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

SPOILER TALK:

Themascyra is such a unique and beautiful place as every woman there is fit or jacked except Diana. Seriously, her mother, Hippolyta and her aunt, General and Greatest Warrior Antiope are more jacked than Wonder Woman but that’s just me. The first battle by German troops against the Amazons is good with a lot of acrobatics and stunt harness action scenes and sets up that the Amazons are not really prepared for the outside world in the age of modern gun powder. Steve Trevor interrogation scene not only sets up the plot of the movie but also has good humor. When Diana and Trevor reached London the movie’s charm factor went up as we’re treated scene by scene on Wondy’s wide-eye wonder in a new place while still being eager to be in the frontlines. They then meet up with the other side characters which is another set of misfits with certain above average skills. The Spy, the Actor, the Tracker, and the Muscle, Diana. Now comes the best scene in the movie which solidifies Wonder Woman to a complete character the trench charge. Right from the get go, it sets up why she is an extraordinary person. When others chose to duck down in the trenches for safety, she chooses climb up to the breach and meet the enemy head-on because she believes it is the right thing to do and that she can do it. Under the hail of bullets and mortar, she just slugs them off. But that doesn’t mean she can do it alone. When she was being focused fire by the Germans, her friends moved in to help her. The soldiers at the back sees this and are inspired to charge in with Wonder Woman and they take the trenches in one single charge. And you think it was over? No. They now move into the town and literally just the 4 of them liberate it from the Germans, though it was mostly Wonder Woman who did it. Just bashing this German infantry with ease. Oh you think an armored car would stop her? No. She just flips this thing like table. And to top is off, she deals with a sniper on a church tower by leaping to the air and just tearing down the tower with her own body. Overkill much but it was fun. Good thing this wasn’t a Battlefield 1 DLC. Then head to airfield as she faces Aries. She then proceeds to lift a tank over Dr. poison as Aries in his moment of glory orders Wonder Woman to kill Dr. Poison with the tank for what she did even though it was Aries who manipulated them. Now hold on. She was lifting a Mark IV tank. A British tank in WW1. Though this might be a historical inaccuracy but the Germans did capture some Mark IV tanks. Though this tank was in a base and not in the field. So this could either go as an inaccuracy or fine. And when she was angry after Trevor died, she then proceeds to explode and run to countless numbers of soldiers beating them up. That CG scene was terrible as it was supposed to look like she was moving fast soldier to soldier as she beats them up. It just looks like she throwing punches aimlessly. And the biggest let down for me… there is not enough brutal beating on Aries. I mean COME ON. You were able to go over the top on single sniper in church tower why not on Aries.
